Ball speed
If ball is flying too fast, it is not practical to use this turning technique, assuming ball may have rolled far away from your body after you complete turn.

If ball travels too slowly, it may come to a complete stop before reaching you.

The shift in center of gravity is not obvious enough
The amount of weight you move with your stride is a key factor in whether you can trick your opponent into moving in wrong direction with your stride.

Defender position

How to practice
No partner
Find a wall, pass ball towards wall as shown in picture below, then when ball is almost under your feet, fake step, turn around and dribble other way.
